 CME Learning Objectives

  • Apply Tennessee legal requirements and regulations when prescribing controlled substances, including appropriate use of the CSMD, the 3-day exemption rule, and Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines

  • Integrate evidence-based, multi-modal prescribing practices for acute pain management or prescribing controlled substances

  • Apply evidence-based assessment and prescribing protocols for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), including evaluating candidacy for MOUD, practicing within Tennessee scope of practice regulations, and integrating medication treatment with counseling and recovery support services

  • Utilize mental health screening tools and toxicology testing to assess safety and guide clinical decision-making when prescribing controlled substances

  • Identify the neurobiological basis and contributing risk factors for addiction and apply this understanding through person-first, destigmatizing communication in clinical practice
